After 2 days of adrenaline-pumping action at the Singapore Sports Hub, the Urban Wheels Challenge has ended with a big bang. It was nothing but fun, fun and more fun - with hearty laughs as friends and family gathered, breathtaking moments as riders did their best to smash their race timings or execute some gravity-defying stunt. For me, along with a glamorous sunburn (think assorted shades of brown, pink and red), here are some takeaways.
It didn't matter what they rode. It didn't matter whether they were one of those who sailed down the stair drop with ease, or launched into midair gracefully at each tabletop, or just chose to take the B-line. What mattered was that they ride and that they are proud of their bikes. Cheers to those who so readily puffed out their chests and beamed their widest to pose for a picture with their steeds. I learnt that behind every rider, regardless of how tough and aggressive they may look bombing down that flight of steps, is a child delighted with a favourite toy.
Over the course of two days, we all saw a fair share of crashes in varying degrees of nastiness. The crowd was worried, but not too worried as we knew every one who had fallen was a fighter. Each incident was a demonstration of the rider's resilience and the resolve to come back stronger. Just to illustrate their zest and energy, these people can lug their bikes up long flights of steps (multiple times) without a single complaint. And be so enthusiastic about it. Have you seen people looking this passionate and satisfied just carrying their bikes?
This was the best carry-bike-and-chiong stance witnessed. A+ for effort..
I learnt that in this community, a competition is not really a competition. Just a conglomerate of like-minded people sharing an activity they all enjoy. Where the people queueing next to you for a practice / race run are not opponents, but friends whom you encourage, and then cheer for at the finishing line. Where you congratulate someone for toppping your time. Because you all enjoy riding, and you all completed the race.
The biking community.
One of pride, resilience and friendship.
In celebration of all that, an overwhelming dose of happy vibes.
Sorry Clarence, your drop-off is damn nice. But. The background is a bit too awesomely distracting.
But hey, we just want to have fun on our bikes :)
