SLIPKNOTS AND SLIPFESTS AT CHESNUT NORTH

The Singapore Bike Show x Bikezilla Mass Ride on 4th March 2017

Darren just doing what he does best. As always, his infectious laughter and great mood always got small events like this into full swing in a heartbeat.

Rain and lightning. That's what the morning greeted us with, just as a small group of us began our weekly sojourn to the west to have a little taste of dirt and adrenaline, and more than a little sweaty grit. But today was a whole lot more special. The rain and the lightning daunted us very little, as we made our way towards another Mass Ride, the first Mass Ride of the year in fact. A congregation of like-minded, two-wheeled gunners on bikes of different shapes, colours and sizes, ready to get down and dirty with heapfuls of epic vibes.

Needless to say, we were all pretty hyped for the first Mass Ride of the year. It's always a good feeling, after coming out of one. You get to meet new people, get dirty with old friends, and always laugh in between. Check out below for a little glimpse through our eyes of what happened during one of the better days of the year.

A mandatory group photo before the Mass Ride kicked into effect. The grandstand at Chestnut Point did little to reflect the wild, sometimes chaotic, levels of energy mountain bikers possess.

Although it may, on some days (especially the hotter days) seem the furthest thing from, Chestnut North has a little highland quality. With that said, the numerous switchbacks all around the trail added leaps to the fun factor.

Jonas downright slaying it. Not every part of the trail was a mudfest. Other more well-drained portions were gritty, and carpeted with wet gravel. Not the best, but the added traction was always welcome.

Kenneth looking fast. He shouldn't have been in Group 2! But regardless, I think he had balls of fun, grinning from ear to ear. That was until his shock developed a mechanical. Really tough luck, but that's a little part of the sport.

Darien, a relatively new face to me. But I was glad to make his acquaintence all the same. Looking calm and composed right through this switchback, with Rahul close on his tail.

Being absolutely new to the sport, the network of roots, and the large swaths of mud on a particularly grey day should have driven must newbies into hiding. Not Kris. Dominating with every pedal stroke.

As the trails converged back onto some familiar territory, the riders were pleasantly surprised by the mini games organized for them. A trackstand competition was amongst the lot, with the longest timing being the winner. Seth here showing some of the newer riders how it's done right. Probably one of the more ingenious mini games organized, Bike Hockey. Riders needed some precision control in sliding that rear wheel out, with the best out of 6 attempts to knock the puck into a makeshift goal. The rain was blessed by all for once that day, as the slicker-than-normal concrete flooring didn't slice off that much rear rubber as feared.

Great vibes all around. That's what riding is all about, whether it's on the trail, or off it.

Another rear rubber thinning mini game. Riders competed in trying to slide a piece of plywood the furthest from one end of the grandstand to the other, by jamming their rear brakes just as their rear tyre rolled over said plywood. Bryan here squishing as much out of his forward momentum as possible.

We weren't the only ones on photo duty! But with this much fun on the ground, who didn't have their cameras out?

Indeed, this particular mass ride was a huge mass of fun. I'm still not quite sure if it's the weather, the fresh trail, or the people. Maybe it's a quaint mix of both. Whatever it is, look out for our next Mass Ride, just around the corner for another round of MASSIVE balls-out, manic and insane fun on the trails. In the meantime, keep the wheels rolling, and keep riding!

Jerome Tan is part of the Bikezilla Editorial Team. When he is not writing about his passion, he is living up some hard-earned freedom in the trails. He enjoys spending time in the green rather than in urban jungles. Some may mistake him for a random homeless person living off the land in the depths of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. With all that said and done, Jerome enjoys wanton mee, and excessive amounts of laksa with equally excessive amounts of chilli just before a day out riding. You know, just to make things interesting.
